Dalton was a very competent plumber. He looked at the situation with my hot water heater, which had developed a slow leak. He made recommendations about types of units and was able to secure a new unit within an hour and come back to my house and switch out the bad one for the new and be done before supper time. Quick, proficient. Professional and Personable. I couldn't be happier.

At Double L Plumbing, we clear clogged drains for homes and businesses throughout Azle, Weatherford, Springtown, Fort Worth, and Lake Worth — and it's one of the most common calls our technicians run every single week. If you're dealing with a clog right now, call us at 817-444-3100 or request service online and we'll get a technician headed your way.

Clogged Drain FAQs

What are the common causes of a clogged drain?

Hair, grease, soap scum, food particles, and mineral buildup from hard water cause the vast majority of clogs we see in Azle and Weatherford homes. Tree root intrusion is also common in older neighborhoods with mature trees near the sewer line.

How can I prevent my drains from becoming clogged?

Use drain screens to catch hair and food debris, never pour grease or oil down a drain, and run hot water through your drains weekly. If your home has hard water — common throughout our service area — a water softener can meaningfully cut down on mineral buildup inside your pipes over time.

Why does my drain smell bad even after unclogging it?

Usually it's leftover buildup in the P-trap or along the pipe walls, or sewer gas escaping through a dried-out trap or a cracked seal. A day-to-day fix is running water in unused drains regularly so the trap stays filled — but a lingering smell that keeps coming back can also point to a partially cleared clog further down the line.

Is it safe to use chemical drain cleaners, and what are the risks?

We generally don't recommend it, especially in older homes. Chemical cleaners are caustic enough to damage pipe walls and seals over repeated use, and they can be dangerous to handle. If a plunger doesn't clear the clog, it's usually safer and more effective to call a plumber than to keep dosing the drain with chemicals.

Should I use boiling water to clear a clogged drain?

Boiling water can work on grease-based clogs in metal pipes, but it's not safe for every situation. Skip it on PVC pipes (it can loosen the joints) and porcelain fixtures (it can crack them). If you do try it, pour it in stages rather than all at once, and stop immediately if you see standing water back up — that's usually a sign of a deeper blockage that needs a professional look.

How much does it cost to fix a clogged drain in Azle or Weatherford?

It depends on the location and severity of the clog. A simple single-fixture clog is usually a quick, affordable fix. A clog deeper in the main line, or one caused by root intrusion, may call for a camera inspection to see exactly what's going on before we recommend a repair — which is the more cost-effective route in the long run compared to guessing.

When does a clogged drain mean I need more than drain cleaning?

If a clog keeps coming back in the same spot, affects multiple drains at once, or comes with gurgling toilets and sewer odors, that usually points to a problem in the main sewer line rather than something a standard cleaning will fix for good. In that case, we'll typically recommend a camera inspection to find the cause — whether it's root intrusion, a belly in the line from shifting soil, or aging pipe — before recommending sewer line repair.

Why Clogged Drains Are So Common in North Texas Homes

A few things about our part of Texas make clogs more frequent than they'd be elsewhere. The clay-heavy soil across Parker and Tarrant County shifts with the seasons, which puts stress on older sewer and drain lines and makes them more prone to cracks, bellies, and blockages. Homes with aging cast iron or clay pipe are especially at risk — rough interior walls catch grease, hair, and debris more easily than modern PVC. On top of that, hard water is common throughout our service area, and mineral buildup inside pipes narrows the passage over time, making even small clogs turn into full blockages faster. And in older neighborhoods with mature trees, root intrusion is a real and recurring issue for sewer lines — something we've pulled directly out of customers' pipes more than once.

Common Causes of a Clogged Drain

Most clogs we see come down to a handful of repeat offenders:

  • Hair and soap scum binding together in bathroom drains
  • Grease, oil, and food particles solidifying in kitchen lines
  • Mineral buildup from hard water narrowing pipes
  • Wipes, cotton balls, and other "flushable" items that don't break down
  • Small foreign objects that make their way into a drain by accident
  • Tree roots intruding into underground sewer lines

If the clog is isolated to one fixture, it's usually one of the first four. If multiple drains in your home are backing up at once, that's often a sign the problem is further down the line — more on that below.

Signs You Probably Have a Clogged Drain

  • Water backs up or drains slower than normal in a sink, tub, or shower
  • Water pools around your shower drain instead of draining away
  • Your toilet gurgles or bubbles when you run water in a nearby sink
  • A drain makes odd gurgling sounds after you run the washing machine or dishwasher
  • You notice a rotting or musty smell coming from a drain even when the area is clean
  • More than one drain in the house is affected at the same time

That last one is worth calling out on its own — if it's not just a single sink or tub, but several fixtures acting up together, the clog is likely in your main line rather than an individual drain, and that's a job for sewer line service, not a plunger.

Clogged Drain vs. Drain Cleaning: What's the Difference?

If you already know your drains are running slow but haven't hit a full stoppage yet, our drain cleaning service covers routine and preventive cleaning for kitchen, bathroom, and floor drains before they turn into an emergency. This page is more about the "why is this happening and is it serious" side of things — if you're past that point and dealing with an active clog, give us a call and we'll get a technician out.

Don't Let a Clog Go Untreated

A clogged drain rarely gets better on its own. Left alone, it can lead to pipe damage, water backing up onto floors, or a full sewer backup — all of which cost more to fix than the original clog would have. If you're seeing any of the warning signs above, it's worth getting it looked at before it turns into an emergency call.
