5 Signs Your Water Line Needs To Be Replaced

Things To Look For That Tip You Off Something’s Wrong

At Double L Plumbing, we’ve seen our fair share of water line problems throughout Weatherford, TX. Your home’s main water line is essentially the lifeline that brings fresh water into your house, making it one of the most critical components of your plumbing system. When this line begins to fail, it can lead to serious problems that affect your entire property.

Because water lines are buried underground, many homeowners don’t realize there’s an issue until significant damage has already occurred. Knowing the warning signs can help you address problems before they escalate into costly emergencies. Here are five clear indicators that your water line might need replacement.

If you suspect there’s something wrong with your water line or you’ve noticed these signs, give us a call at 817-444-3100 or message us online today!

1. Unexplained Increase In Water Bills

One of the first signs of a compromised water line is a sudden spike in your water bill without a corresponding increase in usage. We often hear from confused homeowners who are shocked by bills that have doubled or even tripled despite no changes in their water habits.

This happens because leaking water lines can waste tremendous amounts of water without any visible signs above ground. The water escapes directly into the soil, never making it to your fixtures but still registering on your meter. If you’ve ruled out running toilets and dripping faucets but your bill remains unusually high, it’s time to consider having your water line inspected by our professional team.

2. Reduced Water Pressure Throughout Your Home

When water pressure suddenly drops throughout your entire house, it often points to a main water line issue. While individual fixtures can lose pressure due to localized problems, system-wide pressure loss typically indicates a more serious concern with your main supply line.

Aging water lines develop cracks, pinhole leaks, or can become clogged with mineral buildup that restricts water flow. As these problems worsen, your home receives less and less water, resulting in weak showers, slowly filling toilets, and ineffective appliances. This gradual or sudden decrease in pressure throughout all fixtures strongly suggests your water line needs professional attention.

3. Wet Spots Or Sinkholes In Your Yard

We frequently receive calls from Weatherford homeowners who have noticed unusual wet spots in their yard during dry periods or mysterious areas where the ground seems to be sinking. These signs often appear directly above the path of your underground water line.

When a water line leaks significantly, it saturates the surrounding soil, eventually creating visible puddles or soggy areas even during dry weather. As water continues to erode the soil beneath the surface, it can create depressions or sinkholes in your yard. These physical changes in your landscape are serious red flags that shouldn’t be ignored, as they indicate a substantial leak that requires immediate attention.

4. Discolored Or Contaminated Water

Clean water should be clear and free from visible particles. If you notice your water has taken on a brownish, yellowish, or rusty tint, your water line may be compromised. This discoloration typically occurs when aging pipes begin to corrode, releasing rust and other contaminants into your water supply.

Water that appears cloudy or contains visible sediment can also indicate a breach in your water line that’s allowing soil and debris to enter. Besides being unappealing, contaminated water can pose health risks and damage your plumbing fixtures and appliances. If you’re experiencing persistent water quality issues despite flushing your system, your water line likely needs replacement.

5. Foundation Cracks Or Unusual Mold Growth

Water line problems don’t always present as obvious plumbing issues. Sometimes, the signs appear in your home’s structure. Leaking water lines can undermine your foundation, leading to cracks in walls, uneven floors, or sticking doors and windows. Additionally, the excess moisture can create perfect conditions for mold growth in basements or lower portions of your home.

These structural issues tend to develop gradually, making them easy to dismiss or attribute to normal house settling. However, when paired with any of the other signs we’ve discussed, they strongly suggest water line failure that requires professional assessment.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

At Double L Plumbing, we understand that water line replacement is a significant investment, but addressing these warning signs promptly can prevent more extensive damage to your Weatherford home. Our experienced team can accurately diagnose water line problems and recommend the most appropriate solutions, whether that’s targeted repairs or complete replacement.

These guys saved my bacon. After a call to dig test failed to result water line markings an auger I was using to dig fence post ripped out my neighbors waterline. It didn’t just break it, it grabbed it and spooled it up on the blade ripping it out about 20’ in both directions. The flowing side of the end of the now missing line was easy enough to find but the other end was nowhere to be found. I trenched and dug so many holes the area looked like a war zone. This line continued on about 1/4 mile to the neighbor and the whole thing would need to be replaced if the old one couldn’t be found .The thought of the time and expense of my having to replace the entire line was horrifying. To make matters worse this was a dangerously close to buried fiber optic lines. Whatever it took, it was on me. I was responsible for this mess.Double L got out there. I was relieved at the amount when they gave me a repair estimate, and was made nervously optimistic by their assurances they could find the other end of the line and repair it. They did insist on a new dig test. And who could blame them after what had just happened to me and knowing fiber was in very close proximity. When they started began surgically slicing the earth with a trenching spade. They found the hole/tunnel left in the soil by the previous line and followed it until they found the other end. The mystery was solved by leaning the missing line i was looking for made a 90 degree turn straight down at the break to points unknown (likely to turn again and cross under the drive) rather than continue under the surface on it’s previous trajectory. By the time they finished they had two trucks and crews working. This all had to be hand dug. They replaced/repaired the damaged lines and restored my neighbor’s water service. I was really flenching waiting to hear the costs when they were done. Much to my surprise, the final costs was LESS than their initial estimate. I’d highly recommend Double L. If you’re in a jam they will make it all better at a VERY reasonable price. Their communication was excellent. Office staff, messaging system, everything. I just cannot say enough good things about these folks. I doubt I’ll ever be able to call this a pleasant experience. When is anything involving a plumbing issue pleasant? But they made it as pleasant as could be under the circumstances.
